The program is interactive and will last for approximately 90 minutes. There will be time for questions. One out of four families has a member with a diagnosis of mental illness. This presentation is an opportunity for family members to learn more about what this is like for their loved ones and what they can to to support them.

High Country Academy (HCA) will help children ages 10-17 who are unable to attend public school because of behavioral problems. The program will teach appropriate behaviors, provide counseling, require parental involvement, and offer basic academics. RCCFS began this effort in February 2007 and just over a year later the facility is preparing to open the doors for children with identified treatment needs such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anger issues, depression, problems with substance abuse, and various others. HCA will serve approximately 24-48 children year round from Ashe, Watauga, and Wilkes Counties. The program has a maximum of 12 children per classroom and a four to one child to staff ratio. HCA is a collaborative effort between RCCFS, the Greater Fleetwood Preservation Organization (GFPO), and the Ashe, Watauga, and Wilkes County School Systems. “Potluck Conversations” with Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture (BRWIA) BRWIA announces the first in a year-long series of potlucks and presentations relating to local food issues. The first in the series will be held on May 13 from 6-7:30pm at the Watauga County Agricultural Conference Center. Bring a dish to share and join BRWIA in hearing from ASU honor student, Matt Ballard, who will give a presentation entitled, “Canned responses to food insecurity: Proposal of an alternative and just approach”. Current food assistance programs, although beneficial to low-income Americans, require a better understanding of the context between issues of production (supply) and consumption (demand). The current agroindustrial food system often disenfranchises Americans, particularly those of low-income. These inequities require an alternative approach to improve food security. The Appalachian Pathways Luncheon Series turns to politics with a May 21 luncheon program presented by Appalachian State history professor Karl Campbell. Dr. Campbell recently wrote the biography, “Sam Ervin, Last of the Founding Fathers," about North Carolina’s colorful and contradictory Senator Sam Ervin. He believes Ervin’s career is important to remember, and his stories will inspire you to reconsider some of the most significant events of recent American history. This biography has been widely applauded, and has received the North Caroliniana Book Award for 2007. Campbell is a thorough researcher and an entertaining speaker. This engaging and informative luncheon meets 12:00-1:30 at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. The program cost is $19, and will include multiple entree selections from the Broyhill luncheon buffet, as well as salads, drinks, and choice of desserts. The registration deadline is May 14. We will discuss what an individual consumes and discards in an average lifetime and what this means for the world's population. The Department of Mathematical Sciences will sponsor Math Camp July 7-10 for rising 6th through 12th graders. The camps will meet from 6-9 p.m. and the fee is $120. This is the 11th year that this popular summer enrichment camp has been offered. This camp is designed to actively engage students in mathematics. Students who love math, fear math, hate math, excel at math and/or need help with math, are all welcome and encouraged to attend. In addition, 10 math camp participants will be invited to participate in an Extended Math Camp from 1-5 p.m. during Math Camp week.
