Learn abaout Living with Mental Illness Saturday May 17, 2008 at the Watauga Library

As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, the High Country affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness is hosting a presentation at the Watauga Library at 1 pm on Saturday May 17th. Individuals diagnosed with a serious mental illness will be the featured speakers and will discuss the impact that having a mental illness has had on their lives. There will also be a video that will look at various aspects of mental illness including Dark Days, Acceptance, Treatment, Coping Strategies, and Successes, Hopes and Dreams.

High Country Academy Opens May 22

Rainbow Center – Children & Family Services (RCCFS) is proud to announce the Grand Opening of High Country Academy (HCA) on May 22. This event will kick-off with a Ribbon Cutting at 4 p.m. and open house afterwards until 6 p.m. HCA is located at 8996 U.S. Hwy 221 in Fleetwood.

SafeTalk- Suicide Prevention for Communities

SafeTalk is a nationally best practice program that helps to create suicide-safer communities. The free program includes a light supper and will be presented from 5:30pm to 8:30 at the Jefferson United Methodist Church in Jefferson. Call 846-0781 to reserve a space.

Trail Work Day

Ever wondered what it takes to build a hiking trail? Well here is a great way to learn and get your hands dirty helping to build a hiking trial that will be here forever. Elk Knob is currently building a hiking trail to the summit and needs your help. No experience is needed. Rangers will be there to work with you and to answer any questions. Activities could include any of the following...clearing brush and topsoil in trail path, creating tread, building rock wall, graveling tread, and more.

Race the Cubby Bear 5k

The Cubby Bear 5k is for runners and walkers of all ages. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. with the race starting at 8:00 am. The entry fee is $15 and includes a t-shirt. A water station will be available midway through the course and refreshments will be provided at the end of the race. Proceeds from this event will benefit Cannon Memorial Hospital’s Habitat House Fund.
