HIDE“Potluck Conversations” with Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture (BRWIA)
BRWIA announces the first in a year-long series of potlucks and presentations relating to local food issues. The first in the series will be held on May 13 from 6-7:30pm at the Watauga County Agricultural Conference Center. Bring a dish to share and join BRWIA in hearing from ASU honor student, Matt Ballard, who will give a presentation entitled, “Canned responses to food insecurity: Proposal of an alternative and just approach”. Current food assistance programs, although beneficial to low-income Americans, require a better understanding of the context between issues of production (supply) and consumption (demand). The current agroindustrial food system often disenfranchises Americans, particularly those of low-income. These inequities require an alternative approach to improve food security. Go to www.brwia.org for more information about this organization.

POTTERY AND FINE ART AUCTION
On a fresh North Carolina Spring Evening on May 10, 2008, the second largest home in the Southeastern United States will come alive with a unique and extraordinary pottery and fine art sale. Linbrook Hall is located on a 350 acre estate at 5297 Snyder Country Road in Trinity, N.C., just South of High Point.
North Carolinas best potters are participating in a fund raising event to raise principal funds for a production pottery scholarship for needy and talented students at Montgomery Community College. Over 140 pieces of museum quality pottery, original paintings, fine art baskets, jewelry, quilts, and a made from scratch walnut dulcimer will be auctioned to the highest bidder.
The scholarship is a memorial to Ashley Albright, a young lady who was stricken with spinal meningitis and encephalitis at age 5 and struggled with a 19 year battle from complications of the disease until she died in 2006 at age 24. Ashley took great comfort in her pottery and was known for her comical bird and animal whistles and characters. She was enrolled in the Pottery Program at Montgomery and will graduate posthumously this year.
Of note are some of the outstanding, unique, and unusual collectable works from North Carolina’s most famous potters, all of which can be viewed on our web site: www.ashleyalbright.com.
Vernon Owens of Jugtown Pottery has created a 19 inch salt glazed pot with a large carved tree and bird on the side. The pot is stamped on the bottom with both the original Jugtown stamp and the current Jugtown stamp and is signed personally by Vernon. Vernon’s wife Pam has created a 15 1/2 inch salt glazed Jug with fish carved into the sides and a sculpted bird lid. Their son, Travis, has donated a 15 inch diameter deep dish with a folk style chicken drawn inside and their daughter, Bailey, has formed a salt glazed celadon cat.
Phil Morgan, famous for his fine crystalline, has donated a beautiful 21 3/4 inch red crystalline vase. Red is the rarest color for high fire crystalline and has only recently been perfected by Morgan. Phil has also donated a brilliant yellow 11 inch crystalline vase. Like the Owens’, Phil’s family is also participating. His wife Julia has donated two rare and signed crystalline “chickens with attitudes”. These are her signature pieces but she rarely signs work. One chicken is red with a blue matrix and the other is yellow. Phil’s son, “Little Phil,” has also donated a crystalline wizard and his daughter in law, Dawn has donated a large white crystalline angel.
Third generation potter, Ben Owen, III has donated a large wood fired vase and 5th generation potter, Sid Luck has donated a 5 gallon traditional stoneware salt fired jug.
Mike Ferree, the instructor at Montgomery Community College for over 30 years, has prepared a large 23 inch carved multi-colored terra sigilatta raku’ piece. One of Mike’s students, Regina Voncannon, has donated two intricately decorated double spouted wedding vases.
The largest pots are one by Clyde Gobble, who has made a 34 inch large stoneware vessel with his signature hand carved abbots creek glaze, David Stempfle, who has made a 28 inch tall, 23 inch wide ash fired pot, Lynn Morrow, who has made a 25 ¼ inch bowl glazed with a copper patina glaze, David and Mary Farrell of West Moore Pottery, who have produced a redware and slip trailed 20 ½ inch diameter bowl, David Fernandez of Seagrove Stoneware, who produced a 22 inch vase, Mark Hewitt, who produced a large 20 ½ inch stoneware container, Daniel Johnston, who made a wood fired 23 inch jug, Terry Hunt, who produced a large blue 22 inch salt fired jug, and Bob Meier who produced a 24 inch vase.
Some of the pieces have been especially made in memory of Ashley. Of note is a piece by Sherry Caldwell-Hohl and Bill Hohl which is a beautiful multimedia stoneware and pulled glass piece loaded with carvings and flowers called “flowers for Ashley.” Fred Johnston and Carol Gentithes produced a large stoneware pot with three sketches from Ashley’s sketchbook fired into the glaze. Hal and Eleanor Pugh made a traditional redware plate especially for Ashley that includes the phrase “The Melody of the Songbird lasts forever.” Ashley was called the Songbird for her unique and whistles.
Three very unique works of original art will be sold at the sale. Artist Linton Slack of Asheboro has donated an original water color landscape. Artist Mel Steele of Reidsville has donated an original oil pastel painting that is 32 inches x 48 inches entitled “loading the kiln.” This painting features Jugtown Potter Vernon Owens and his son Travis loading a salt wood fired kiln. Ashley’s Mother, Bonnie Pike Albright has painted an original Oil painting 30 inches x 40 inches entitled “the claymakers.” This painting features Phil Morgan, Vernon Owens, Mike Ferree, Ben Owen, III, Travis Owens, and Lexington Potter Clyde Gobble working clay on the old mule driven pug mill at jugtown. Also featured in this painting are Mabel the Mule and Jugtown’s famous cat Linwood.
Also featured are works from Kim Ellington, Charlie Lisk, Graham Chriscoe, Eric Reichard, Paul Ray, Terry Hunt, Roman Smith, Uhwarrie Crystalline, and about 100 other talented NC potters and artists.
