Art in the Park in Blowing Rock, North Carolina begins its 46th year, on May 17th! This award-winning series features the works of juried artisans from all over the Eastern U.S. in metal, fiber, watercolor and oil painting, wood, photography, basketry, jewelry, clay, glass and more. The Chamber of Commerce provides free shuttles throughout the day. Just park your car at Tanger Outlet Center or the Food Lion Grocery on Highway 321 bypass, and hop on the shuttle which will bring you right into downtown Blowing Rock. The show is located at the American Legion Grounds just behind Memorial Park and admission is FREE. Show hours are 10 am til 5 pm. The program is interactive and will last for approximately 90 minutes. There will be time for questions. One out of four families has a member with a diagnosis of mental illness. This presentation is an opportunity for family members to learn more about what this is like for their loved ones and what they can to to support them.

High Country Academy (HCA) will help children ages 10-17 who are unable to attend public school because of behavioral problems. The program will teach appropriate behaviors, provide counseling, require parental involvement, and offer basic academics. RCCFS began this effort in February 2007 and just over a year later the facility is preparing to open the doors for children with identified treatment needs such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anger issues, depression, problems with substance abuse, and various others. HCA will serve approximately 24-48 children year round from Ashe, Watauga, and Wilkes Counties. The program has a maximum of 12 children per classroom and a four to one child to staff ratio. HCA is a collaborative effort between RCCFS, the Greater Fleetwood Preservation Organization (GFPO), and the Ashe, Watauga, and Wilkes County School Systems. This year the coalition will be distributing information on a program to protect and locate missing persons due to wandering as a result of Alzheimer's,Autism and other developmental disorders. The Appalachian Pathways Luncheon Series turns to politics with a May 21 luncheon program presented by Appalachian State history professor Karl Campbell. Dr. Campbell recently wrote the biography, “Sam Ervin, Last of the Founding Fathers," about North Carolina’s colorful and contradictory Senator Sam Ervin. He believes Ervin’s career is important to remember, and his stories will inspire you to reconsider some of the most significant events of recent American history. This biography has been widely applauded, and has received the North Caroliniana Book Award for 2007. Campbell is a thorough researcher and an entertaining speaker. This engaging and informative luncheon meets 12:00-1:30 at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. The Department of Mathematical Sciences will sponsor Math Camp July 7-10 for rising 6th through 12th graders. The camps will meet from 6-9 p.m. and the fee is $120. This is the 11th year that this popular summer enrichment camp has been offered. This camp is designed to actively engage students in mathematics.
