When the weather is really bad in Avery County, it's a good time to drop off the mountain to McDowell County to hike and enjoy the waterfalls in that area. A couple recently visited were Stillhouse Falls and Toms Creek Falls.
Unfortunately, one cannot visit Stillhouse Creek Waterfalls without crossing private property for which you must have permission. However, there is a nearby falls that has easy access. This is Toms Creek Falls.
Directions:
Stillhouse Creek Falls: Located off Hwy. 221 in North Cove, McDowell County. Private access.
Toms Creek Falls: Located in McDowell County, Woodlawn section which is approximately 8 miles North of Marion. At the Woodlawn Motel, travel Huskins Branch Road approximately one mile to a parking lot on the right. The trailhead leading to Toms Creek Falls begins at this parking lot. It's an easy hike of approximately 1/4 mile.
Enjoy!
